METROLINX

Lean Methodologies

Working as an RFM Technical Co-op at Metrolinx, a major regional transportation agency in Ontario, I was able to work on over 8 projects within various teams. During my second co-op term at Metrolinx, I worked with the reliability team to carry out the office's first Lean Six Sigma driven project to reduce the number of traindelay minutes caused by false alarms.

MY ROLE

  • Acted as a Lean Six Sigma yellow belt; a team member who supports the project and reviews improvements

  • Documented the project life-cycle and monitored adaptations of lean methodologies into work culture

  • Created Ishikawa (cause & effect) diagrams, process maps, and various other brainstorming charts

  • Worked collaboratively in a team through daily & weekly time-boxed meetings

RESULTS

  • Acted as a contributing member in paving a path for adoption of Lean Six Sigma methods in our division as per Metrolinx CEO, Phil Verster's, overall company vision for growth

  • Developed an actionable plan for continuous improvement & maintenance strategy

  • Experienced team growth through communication and peer support

Empathy Mapping

What started as a mobile app idea, has now pivoted into an online platform of resources for young women in STEM. This digital aspect is complimentary to the overall social enterprise known as FEM in STEM. As a solo-founder, I have implemented self-taught business strategies and design aspects including and not limited to: business proposals/pitches, process maps, wire-framing, employee onboarding, and empathy mapping.

RESULTS

  • Reached over 250 girls across Canada through online platforms and outreach

  • Participated in the LOI Labs Startup Accelerator & won the Velocity 5K Pitch

  • Hired and lead 6 interns and additional volunteers

  • Created processes that are scalable for growth in other provinces as well as developed connections with 15+ STEM organizations and clubs

This was the first iteration of the app concept for FEM in STEM. To see a full size render of the photo (or the real thing), contact me!

Taking the advice of a mentor, I turned the app concept into a web platform. Above is one of the sketches/ wire frames used during the ideation phase.

To the left are two video captures of the site, following a similar structure to the sketch.

THE CATALYST PROGRAM

Curriculum planning

The Catalyst Program is an virtual program offered by FEM in STEM. The objective of the program is to accelerate the personal and professional development of 25 high school or post-secondary females across Ontario. Through an online community, curriculum, mentors, and in-person events, the Catalyst Program evokes a growth mindset to push women pursuing underrepresented industries forward.

A Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) was created to roughly outline the tasks necessary to implement the program. Due to the large scope of tasks within this project, I grouped similar tasks sequentially and incremented tasks that span the lifecycle of the project.

CURRICULUM PLANNING

In planning what content to put into the learning modules and how to present it, user personas were constructed to understand what would provide the most value to the participant.

Goals and objectives were then set as a framework to understand the sequence and contents of the modules.
